Counter-Reformation, 16mm, 2024.
In the final session of the Council of Trent in 1563, Vatican theologians uphold the permissibility of the sacred image and icon against Reformation charges of idolatry, leading to an explosion of investment into fine art in Europe. This included, for the first time, the commission of paintings by female artists. Sofonisba Anguissola is the first professional female court painter: she amasses a body of work depicting Europe’s finest nobles and dignitaries. But throughout her career she returned again and again to the subject that fascinated her most: herself.
Counter-Reformation is a non-conventional, essayistic documentary that untangles and retangles threads of politics, religion, history, and the self-portrait, leading the filmmaker to an examination of her own contemporary cinematic practice. A deeply personal mediation on faith and the moving image, Counter-Reformation seeks to place experimental cinema within a theological and religious sphere; an under-explored but urgently fruitful reconciliation.
Made with the support of the CalArts School of Film and Video.
Premiering in 2024.
Caro in Ten Minutes (Super 16mm, 2020)
Caro is sick. Well, she thinks she might be, but everyone around her, including her doctor, believes that her pain is all in her head. Left unsatisfied by her traditional outlets of support, Caro meets a mysterious woman who not only listens to her, but sees her as well. Shot on Super 16mm, Caro in Ten Minutes evokes the restless, meandering energy of the New Wave, but it is very much a snapshot of a woman today: anxious and alienated by conventional structures of support, and yet undeterred in her search for the meaning behind her pain.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Digital, 2023)
An eager campaign volunteer. A demure neighbor. Secrets, lies, and politics as usual. It’s election season, and tensions are high in the Neighborhood.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a short thriller that grapples with the effects of politics on our everyday relationships: fractured communities, rising social anxieties, decaying trust in our neighbors... In a world of increasing isolation, our social relations are fraying at lightning speed and politics is driving us away even from those closest to us. Are we right to suspect an enemy around every corner? A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood asks us if we can ever, in this day and age, really trust our neighbors.
