Caroline Johnson is a filmmaker and writer based in Los Angeles. Her work straddles genres and mediums, from narrative fiction to documentary, essay, and movement- based films. Always interested in cross-medium collaboration, Caroline fuses her narrative worlds with techniques and inspiration from the abyss of experimental film.
Caroline recently obtained her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. She works largely on 16mm, shooting much of her own footage on her Bolex camera and other analog instruments like the Oxberry animation stand and the optical printer. Her films have played at the Beijing International Short Film Festival, Chroma Art Film Festival, the Greenwich International Film Festival, the Ravenwood Film Festival, and others.
Caroline has an insatiable curiosity about the inner lives and ambitions of modern women, and the myriad ways they can be represented onscreen. She is interested in the line between performance and reality, modern ethnographic cinematic techniques, and the relationship between spirituality, belief systems, and the artistic process. She writes about many of these things on her Substack.
